Marginal leakages of class 5 glass ionomer cement restorations

Abstract
One hundred and sixty class 5 cavities were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 80 extracted teeth. The prepared cavities were restored according to experimental conditions with 2 types of glass ionomer cement.
In order to evaluate the degree of marginal leakage of restoration, dye penetration method was used and longitudinally sectioned specimens w¢¥~re examined under stereomicroscope with predetermined criteria. All findings were analysed statistically by X¢¥-test.
The obtained results were as follows.
1. Degree of marginal l.-ajage was influenced not only by the material itself but by the restorative procedures.
2. Degree of marginal leakage was decreased by dentin conditioning.
3. Surface finishing and polishing after 21 hours was effective to reduce the marginal leakage.
4. Degrees of marginal leakage of the occlusal margins were lower than that of cervical margins.
